Government is that body or institution in the
state that see to the
welfare,
peace and orderliness of the citizens.
Government
as an institution of state simply means government as an
agent of the
state. Government as a process or art of governing is the
body vested
with the power and authority for maintaining peace and
stability by
making or enforcing fundamental laws in a given state.
Government
and politics
Politics according to Max Weber is defined as the operations of the
state and
its institution. It is the activities within and related to
the
political system. Government is related to politics because
politics
itself is formed where human beings are in any association,
organization
and society and their activities ought to be regulated by
the government.
Functions
of government include:
1. To
promote the happiness of the citizen by providing the basic
needs for
their living.
2. To
promote development of the country by establishing industries
and other
business.
3. By
providing an enabling environment
4.
Government is responsible for the preservation of fundamental human
rights of
the citizen.
5. It is
also the responsibility of government to make, enforce and
interpret
the law governing a given society.
Three organs of Government include;
1. Executive
function: concerned with the formulation and
implementation
of policies
2.
Legislative function: law making organ
3. Judiciary
function: responsible for interpreting the law.
Citizen
and Government
A citizen is
a legal member of the state with full constitutional or
legal right
in the country. Citizens and government are the essential
components
in any society. The state regulates the behaviour and
conducts of
its citizens through the machinery of the government.
Without the
government to regulate the political behaviour of the
citizens,
the society would be in chaos and anarchy.
